UN Pacific Forum on Business and Human Rights Sets Stage for a Just Transition in the Pacific
The 4th United Nations Pacific Forum on Business and Human Rights wrapped up in Suva, marking a significant step forward in fostering innovative discussions and collaborations among business and human rights stakeholders on achieving a just transition across the Pacific region. Over the past two days, the Forum has not only strengthened regional partnerships but also carved a path for identifying actionable strategies to ensure that development in the Pacific truly leaves no one behind.
The Forum, organized by UN Human Rights Pacific, saw extensive deliberations on key issues that impact the lives and livelihoods of Pacific islanders. Among the diverse topics covered were the right to work, the Pacific fishing industry, digitalization, and the role of extractive industries. The conversations consistently underscored the urgent need for development that places people and the planet at its core, emphasizing the Pacific’s unique needs and aspirations. Attendees agreed on the necessity of Pacific solutions to address Pacific issues, emphasizing that a people-centered approach should shape the region’s path to sustainable development.
Throughout the sessions, recurring themes included the rights to self-determination, meaningful participation, and the importance of partnerships, as well as the imperative to provide access to remedies for those impacted by business activities. These principles are crucial not only for achieving sustainable economic growth but also for ensuring respect for human rights across all sectors.
UNA Fiji was also a vital part of this Forum, represented by its Honorable Secretary, Mr. Vipin Maharaj. Mr. Maharaj’s participation highlighted UNA Fiji’s commitment to advancing human rights within the Pacific’s business landscape, focusing on fostering responsible business practices and advocating for the Pacific’s voice in regional and global dialogues on sustainability and equity.
As the Forum concluded, UN Human Rights Pacific reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining and building on the relationships strengthened during these discussions. With a commitment to amplifying Pacific voices, UN Human Rights Pacific aims to integrate insights from the Forum into the global dialogue on business and human rights. The Forum’s outcomes will contribute to the ongoing global Business and Human Rights Forum, where the Pacific is paving the way for a more just and sustainable world.
With the Forum’s achievements and the continued dedication of multiple stakeholders the future of the Pacific looks poised for meaningful change—one that respects its people, preserves its environment, and champions a truly inclusive and sustainable transition.
