Description:

This day-long round table discussion had been focused on the sustainability of tuna stocks in the western central pacific. The CSO roundtable discussion had members from PIPSO, WWF, and PIANGO. The discussion mainly focused on setting up target reference points for South Pacific Albacore tuna. As discussions unfolded, the welfare of fishing crews was also discussed. The monitoring of the ships berthed at harbors was also taken into consideration. Moreover, reports were presented that displayed the level of fishing catches in the western central pacific (WCP). It was unanimously decided upon that all stakeholders involved must understand that we need to identify a point of no return. At current, there has been no overfishing identified yet in the pacific. However, conservation must be practiced to sustain fisheries and tuna stocks for future generations. At the end of the day, a draft communiqué was made that has been presented at the Western Central Pacific Fisheries Committee 15th session (WCPFC15).

Communiqué issued at the end of a one-day Civil Society Organisations (CSO) round Table on Pacific Tuna Fisheries, which was held on 21 November 2018 at the WWF Pacific Regional Headquarters in Suva, Fiji. The consultation workshop to develop a CSO position to WCPFC15.
