Hon. Mr. Yash Maharaj represents Fiji in the upcoming Oceania Zonal Championship

Hon. Mr. Yash Maharaj is ecstatic to represent Fiji in the upcoming Oceania Zonal Championship in Melbourne, Australia next Monday.

The competition would be difficult but, Mr. Maharaj is looking forward to give his best and make Fiji proud.

Mr. Maharaj who is also one of the longest serving member of UNA Fiji will make his international debut for Fiji in the tournament.

He is the Executive Officer in the Office of the Vice-President here at UNA Fiji.

"I learnt to play chess at the age of 7, which was taught to me by my best friend. Since then, I used to play chess only once or twice a year after my annual exams in school. I had started to play chess seriously when I was in Form 6 in 2019 when I had embarrassingly lost to a junior in front of the crowd. I started to train everyday since the ‘incident’. By the end of the year I had fallen in love with beauty of chess as it resembled art to me. All chess players are artists but not all artists are chess players".

In 2020, Mr. Maharaj was placed first in the APCO Fiji National Championship -Intermediate Category and third place in 2022 Vodafone Fiji National Championship.

UNA Fiji would like to wish all the best to Mr. Maharaj for the tournament.
