UNA Fiji Community Impact Project: Leadership through the Art of Diplomacy – Navigating Climate Change for a Resilient Fiji.

Korotogo, Sigatoka – The sun-soaked shores of Korotogo witnessed an extraordinary convergence of youthful energy and environmental stewardship as the Basic Diplomacy Training Programme (BDTP) 2024 Community Impact Project commenced with a resounding call to action. This landmark event, graced by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports FIJI, Mr. Meli Nacuva, marked the beginning of a transformative journey aimed at empowering Fiji’s youth to become climate champions.

Mr. Meli Nacuva captivated the audience with profound insights into the critical role of youth in the fight against climate change. He emphasized the necessity of harnessing the innovative ideas, boundless energy, and unwavering commitment of the younger generation. “Our youth are the vanguards of change,” he declared, “and their active involvement is imperative for a sustainable and resilient future.” By equipping youth with tools of diplomacy and leadership, they can become formidable advocates for climate action. Mr. Nacuva underscored the importance of diplomatic skills in effectively communicating, negotiating, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders to devise impactful solutions. “Mastering the art of diplomacy,” he asserted, “is essential in our collective effort to combat climate change and fortify Fiji’s resilience.”

A poignant moment in the ceremony was the symbolic planting of 10,600 mangroves along the foreshore of Korotogo Village. This initiative added to the 16,676 mangroves already planted, emphasizing the tangible actions being taken to address environmental challenges. The event's momentum was further enhanced by a leadership workshop attended by 17 youths from Nadroga Navosa, drawing participants from various areas, including the interior villages of Draubuta. The workshop content was meticulously crafted to equip participants with essential leadership and diplomatic skills. Sessions ranged from an introduction to leadership and diplomatic protocol to mastering the nuances of social and networking etiquette. Participants engaged in dynamic activities, developing and refining their pitches, tackling real-life leadership challenges, and brainstorming innovative solutions.

The sessions addressed real-life leadership challenges faced by youth in various fields, encouraging participants to brainstorm and discuss potential solutions. The concluding session recapped key takeaways, with a small graduation program where participants received certificates. The program featured closing remarks from Ms. Josie Prasad, CEO of Bula Outsourcing, the major sponsor. This comprehensive approach ensured that participants left with a robust understanding of leadership and diplomatic skills, ready to implement them in their communities.
