Hon. Ms. Lorraine Seeto represented the UNA Fiji at the 2023 National Economic Summit

Hon. Ms. Lorraine Seeto represented the United Nations Association of Fiji (UNA Fiji) at the 2023 National Economic Summit, which was held on 20 – 21 April 2023 at the Grand Pacific Hotel and Albert Park.

Ms. Seeto is the Governance Advisor at UNA Fiji. In this role, she provides high-quality leadership guidance, technical support, and training to UNA Fiji on Good Governance.

The theme for the National Economic Summit was “Reshaping our Future through Genuine Dialogue and Collaboration”.

The Summit, officially opened by the Prime Minister of Republic of Fiji, Hon. Mr. Sitiveni Rabuka, which consisted of five plenary sessions with breakouts into twelve (12) Thematic Working Groups, whose deliberations created the content of the National Economic Summit Resolutions.

The topics that were discussed during the National Economic Summit were; The State of Economy and Future for Fiscal, Responsible, Responsive and Resilient Leadership, Universal Coverage and Basic Healthcare, Research, and Innovation: Pathway for Economic Prosperity and Transparency and Accountability: Priorities for Effective Governance.

Ms. Seeto was also the moderator for the Responsible, Responsive, and Resilient Leadership discussion.

Other moderators were Permanent Secretary for Finance Hon. Mr. Shiri Gounder, Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services Hon. Mr. James Fong, Permanent Secretary for local Government Seema Sharma and Assistance Minister for Finance Hon. Mr. Esrom Immanuel.

Various stakeholders from different fields were part of the two-day summit. Daunting challenges faced by Fiji were discussed, including unsustainable national debt levels, geopolitical and global economic uncertainties, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This National Economic Summit is a new way forward and working in collaboration with those outside the government.

The findings and recommendations from this summit will contribute to the formulation of the National Budget and Fiji’s National Development Plan.
