He is originally from Noatau, Rotuma, and currently resides in Namadi Heights with his grandmother. He dedicated his achievement to his grandmother who always encouraged him never to give up in life and keep moving forward.
As a trainee, Mr. Ricardo was inspired by the members of UNA Fiji as how the members took their time out to run the Basic Diplomacy Training Programme (BDTP) every Saturday. “What inspired me to continue with BDTP were the words of the members of UNA Fiji saying things may seem hard right now, but if you were to sit until the end of this training, you will be able to tackle anything that comes your way”.
One of Mr. Ricardo’s favorite moments as a trainee was when they had to perform a role play on scenarios set by the UNA Fiji’s Peace Building Advisor Honorable Ms. Arieta Koila Costello on conflict and problem-solving.
It was hard for Mr. Ricardo to balance his school work and BDTP but, BDTP taught him the importance of time management and balancing work. “It changed me for the better and broadened my thinking capacity that made me consider others' perspectives when making decisions. I had to balance my classes and studies by putting aside my phone as well as refusing outings with friends in order to perform for both BDTP and School”.
Mr. Ricardo is happy to be part of the UNA Fiji family and looks forward to learning essential lessons and practices such as critical thinking and problem-solving in real life.

Meet Hon. Ms. Adi Vulori Baleiwai

Ms. Adi Vulori Baleiwai had to juggle between different roles in order to complete her Basic Diplomacy Training Programme (BDTP).
The 35-year-old who recently graduated from United Nations Association Fiji (UNA Fiji) BDTP is a mother of three children and an agriculture science teacher at Dudley High School.
Ms. Baleiwai had to juggle her responsibilities as a wife, mother, and teacher to successfully complete her BDTP. “The main challenge that I had was sacrificing my family time to attend the class every Saturday and it has never been easy. As a working mum, wife, and a teacher by profession it was quite challenging juggling the different roles I played all at once. It was overcome through proper time management and sacrifice.”
She dedicated her achievement to her family without whom she wouldn’t have completed BDTP.
With all the responsibilities on her shoulder, Ms. Baleiwai thought of dropping out from the BDTP as attending the BDTP was contradicting her responsibilities at home. “The thought of receiving that certificate really motivated me through and setting a benchmark for my children really motivated me to beat the odds not forgetting those that encourage me to persevere despite the challenges”.
The BDTP was an eye-opening experience for Ms. Baleiwai as she got to meet different people of different caliber and how they achieved their goals in life. When Ms. Baleiwai was given the opportunity to represent the French Republic during the UNA Fiji’s BDTP Model UN Summations, she enjoyed doing research and knowing about the country in detail.
Being a teacher, Ms. Baleiwai delivered lessons to students but, being part of the BDTP as a trainee, she had an altogether different feeling for her. She said that people should never stop learning as every day is a new learning opportunity.

During the fasting month of Ramadhan, I had to leave Nadi at 4:30 am and be at the venue by 9:00 am. The other challenge I faced was juggling work, university work and training at UNA Fiji. The most extreme challenge was during the final examination weeks of university as I also had to prepare for summations”.

Mr. Ud-Dean was lost for words when he received the Best Delegate and Graduate Speaker awards. I met the members of UNA Fiji who are some of the most articulate people that I have had the pleasure of being acquainted with”.
Most importantly, Mr. Ud-Dean had the opportunity to experience Diplomacy and Leadership training from the Founder and President of UNA Fiji Mr. Akmal Ali. The interactive sessions they had with High Commissioners and Ambassadors as well as other specialists, was the connection between theory and practice.
